Aside from the commonly known benefits of meditation such as stress relief and anxiety reduction, meditation utilized as a regular and daily practice has been proven to provide extremely powerful and positive effects on an individuals overall physical health, dramatically enhanced sense of awareness, as well as numerous emotional and psychological benefits.

Through the use of sophisticated equipment such as the electroencephalogram (EEG) and the MRI technologies, which are used to measure brain wave activity, it has been shown that when in a deep meditative state that human brain wave activity is dramatically reduced in some areas and increased in others. As a result, through regular practice, meditation provides numerous long term benefits in relation to the bodies ability to function as it was created to do.

Recent Scientific Research

According to research performed by Dr. Bruce Lipton, at Stanford University School Of Medicine, 95% of all disease is created by stress. While it has been known for some time that many illnesses and diseases are directly related to excessive stress, prior research believed it to be approximately 70%.

Through Dr. Lipton’s extensive research many would be sufferers of varying illness and disease can be spared the repercussions associated with enduring such circumstances and can actually initiate a plan that would dramatically reduce the chances of ever becoming seriously ill!

Dr Lipton’s work points out that although many people today believe that the primary reason for their stress is due to external factors such as situations and circumstances they experience in day to day life, quite the opposite is actually true.

Stress is actually due to internal processes within oneself at a cellular level which create imbalances in the release of the various naturally produced chemicals within the body that lead to a breakdown in the immune systems natural ability to fen off illness and disease, that under ideal conditions, the human body is more than capable of handling.

Prior to Dr. Liptons research, many were led to believe that many illnesses and diseases have been passed on genetically from previous generations, and that the recipients had no control over many ailments that they endured. Dr Lipton's research proves that this is not the case and that regardless of what we have been previously taught and come to believe, humans have the ability to alter the way that their more than 5 trillion cells react to external situations by changing their thoughts, perceptions and beliefs, thereby changing the health of individual cells.

According to Dr. Lipton, "Until recently, it was thought that genes were self-actualizing…that genes could ‘turn themselves on and off.’ Such behavior is required in order for genes to control biology. Though the power of genes is still emphasized in current biology courses and textbooks, a radically new understanding has emerged at the leading edge of cell science. It is now recognized that the environment, and more specifically, our perception (interpretation) of the environment, directly controls the activity of our genes. Environment controls gene activity through a process known as epigenetic control."

"This new perspective of human biology does not view the body as just a mechanical device, but rather incorporates the role of a mind and spirit. This breakthrough in biology is fundamental in all healing for it recognizes that when we change our perception or beliefs we send totally different messages to our cells and reprogram their expression. The new-biology reveals why people can have spontaneous remissions or recover from injuries deemed to be permanent disabilities."

So What Does All This Research Have To Do With Meditation?

Everything! And I Mean Everything!

You see, through the regular practice of Meditation, the practitioner is able to tap into and experience states of deep calm and a profound state of inner peace and well being which changes emotional internal processes of the practitioner, which in turn has a direct impact on an individuals cellular reaction. By balancing and bringing these cells into harmony the practitioner is dramatically reducing the chances of creating and contracting many various forms of illness and dis-ease, and allows the body to heal itself as it was intended to do.

Through the regular use of meditation, the practitioners emotional centers become balanced which in turn dramatically reduces the various stressors which have been found to cause these diseases!

In additional studies done by researcher Sara Lazar, PhD, who is a research scientist at Harvard Medical School's Massachusetts General Hospital, it has been shown that a practice of regular meditation literally changes the size of the parts of the brain known as the cerebral cortex, which is directly related to the aging process.( See Interview )

In separate studies done by various Neuro-scientists, it has been shown that meditation also decreases activity in the amygdala, the portion of the brain which processes fear, which also explains why the feelings of well being and inner peace can be obtained by utilizing meditation.

Additional studies have also concluded that participants who suffered from high blood pressure, and had for years utilized medication to control it, were able to cease using it after a short time of practicing meditation and in many cases experienced blood pressure levels at or below the levels that they had previously experienced while taking their required medication.

While many people associate meditation as a strictly spiritual discipline, it is evident that many benefit from the effects of meditation from a strictly scientific viewpoint as well, and as Dr Lipton’s research pointed out, regardless of an individuals religious or spiritual preference, there is a direct correlation between the mind and body.

For those that choose to experience deeply enhanced spiritual states, there are forms of meditation that will assist them in doing so. For others who choose to utilize meditation strictly for the health benefits of stress reduction and anxiety relief, the benefits are quite evident regardless of an individuals religious or spiritual preference.

Meditation is without question beneficial in the life of anyone who chooses to practice it and has certainly been proven to have many physical as well as psychological benefits for those that choose to practice it regularly.

Spiritual Benefits Of Meditation

Aside from the physical benefits mentioned above meditation used as a daily practice has been shown to heighten the overall awareness of the practitioner, and greatly enhance the individuals ability to tap into and dramatically increase their intuitive abilities and overall sense of awareness.

Although science is sometimes reluctant to make claims that can’t be proven from a measurable standpoint, those that practice meditation and experience firsthand the many benefits that are derived from it, on a psychological level don’t require scientific studies to prove the tremendous and numerous benefits that are realized from it's use.

My personal experience has been that after only a few days of practicing a form of guided meditation referred to as Multi-Dimensional meditation , taught by an incredible teacher, Eric Pepin , who created a guided meditation system known as The Foundation Guided Meditation System and is also the founder of the Higher Balance Institute , I began to experience an overall sense of wholeness and unexplainable feelings of assurance, calm and overall well being after only a few short sessions, that I had not been able to tap into previously, using several other conventional meditation and relaxation techniques for extended periods.

There is absolutely no question in my mind that meditation makes a profound difference in the outcomes of my day to day life.

As much as I would like to adequately convey in words the type of fulfillment that meditation provides psychologically and/or spiritually, it is one of those things that has to be personally experienced in order to fully grasp the profound nature and depth of the experience.

The only way to become absolutely certain as to how meditation can benefit you personally is to learn how to meditate , begin to practice it, and allow yourself to be the judge.

In this day and age of almost overwhelming resources and with so many conflicting views, it has never been more important to discover your own truth. I know of no better way to accomplish that, than through the practice of meditation.

There is no doubt in my mind that by making the choice to do so will make a dramatic difference in improving your life, benefit you in a number of ways, physically, psychologically and spiritually as well, as it has me and millions of others worldwide.

As with everything else in life, you have a choice to utilize, or not, the practice of meditation in your life. Your previous choices are a direct reflection of the day to day events, conditions, and circumstances that you currently experience. If your life is not currently producing the results that you desire, it may prove beneficial to you to change the actions that have created your existing circumstances.

According to the famous Albert Einstein, the definition of insanity is "Continuing to do the same things over and over and expecting different results." A consistent meditation program may be just the thing that is needed to change the results that you are currently experiencing.

Whatever your choices are today and in the future it is our hope that they might lead you one step closer to living a life filled with Well Being, Joy, Love, Fulfillment and Deep Inner Peace.
